FAQ

Q:     How much water does a lawn require?

Most lawns require 1 inch of water per week in normal 80-90 degree days. However, if the temperature goes up, so does the water requirement.

Q:     What time of day is the best time to water?

B&B Lawnscapes & Irrigation and Rain Bird recommend watering early in the morning, followed by evening watering. Water in the middle of the day only if it is cool or if you have a new lawn requiring constant moisture. You should only water more than once per day if evaporation is extreme or if your soil won't hold water because of the clay content or the slope of a hill causes too much run-off.

Q:     How often should the lawn receive water?

It is generally preferable to water infrequently for a longer period of time than frequently for short periods. Watering infrequently provides deep water sources that roots search for. Frequent watering promotes surface root growth.

Q:     What is the length or duration that a lawn should
        receive water?

The length of watering is determined by how fast your sprinklers apply water. Spray heads typically apply 1/2 inches of water in 15 minutes. Impulse/rotors apply 1/2 inches of water in 60-90 minutes.

Q:     What should be done when it rains?

Most timers have a button for shutting down during rain. In addition, connecting to a rain sensor allows automatic shutdown during rainy weather. Rain sensors are a standard for B&B Irrigation Systems.

Q:     What happens to the timer when the power goes off?

The battery retains the programmed memory, no resetting is necessary.

Q:     How deep do the trenches need to be to install the
        sprinkler pipe?

Sprinkler pipe only needs to be buried 6-12 inches below the surface of the ground. The actual depth is determined by the height of the fitting, plus the length of the rise, plus the height of the sprinkler head.

Q:     How much water pressure is needed?

At least 50 pounds per square inch (psi).

Q:     How is the water pressure measured?

With a pressure gauge or through the city.

Q:     Can impulse and spray heads run at the same time?

No, since they water at different rates they must run at different times.

Q:     How does the system get shut down in the winter?

B&B Lawnscapes & Irrigation offers a maintenance program each year for your system. We do the spring opening, monthly checks, certified backflow tests, and winterization for your irrigation system. Turning off the main system master valve stops water from flowing to the system. Manual drains are then used to drain the mainline. All individual lateral lines are drained and cleared of water - usually blown out using forced air. The timer is unplugged.

Q:     How does the system get restarted in the spring?

The timer must be plugged in and programmed. The manual drains must be closed and the main valve opened. Each lateral line must be tested and heads should be adjusted as needed.

Q:     What maintenance needs to be done?

Maintenance that should be done monthly includes: adjusting the timer setting, checking and adjusting the sprinkler heads, and cleaning the mainline filter. Once per season, the filters in all sprinkler heads should be cleaned, each valve should be manually operated, and all wire and wire nuts should be checked for damage. Sprinkler heads should be unclogged and installation levels of heads should be adjusted to ground level as needed.
